Teeth are very strong, but they can break and chip. Interestingly, a cracked tooth might not hurt when you bite down. It’s when you release the bite that you feel the pain. Your tongue might notice a broken or chipped tooth before you feel any pain. Pain may come and go. Breathing in and out can cause discomfort.
If you have a cracked, broken or chipped tooth, you will need to see your dentist as soon as possible. Home treatment is not possible. When it happens over the holidays, an emergency dentist can provide treatment to get you back to your normal routine and protect your teeth from further damage.
What to do until you can get to the dentist:
· Take an over-the-counter pain reliever.
· Rinse your mouth with warm water.
· If your mouth is bleeding, apply pressure to the area using a gauze pad. If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 10 minutes, use a tea bag and apply pressure to the area.
· Using a cold pack on the jaw, cheek or lips can reduce swelling and help manage pain.
The type of break and amount of damage will determine treatment. A cracked tooth can often be fixed with filling material, but may require a crown to prevent the crack from getting worse. Depending on the depth of the crack, a root canal may also be required. More serious breaks or splits almost always require root canal treatment to try and save the tooth.
To prevent cracking a tooth while eating, you should avoid biting down on hard candies, ice or popcorn kernels. When you’re playing sports, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth.
